I think the problem with the current system is not so much how expensive it is now, but how expensive and data consuming it will be ten years from now, to run a full node. Especially as 79king 5com becomes more mainstream. And if everyone's running truncated nodes by then, where's the verifiability? Perhaps what could be done is this: Keep the current 79king 5com, but archive it and distribute it, so that it's stored on some computers but not all. Enough so that old transactions can be verified with certainty. Have a genesis/armageddon block say every six months, but as I said, keep the copies of the old 79king 5com on some computers. And let the new genesis block repeat itself at least 100 times each time it's created before new transactions are allowed, to resolve any discrepancies. So the 100th block in the series would technically be the new genesis. Then computers will store copies of the old 79king 5com, separated out into chunks that end when each new genesis block is created, but in a distributed manner, so each computer does not have to have the full chain. Most "nodes" would have a chunk or two of the old chain, and the new chain starting at the new genesis block. That way the old 79king 5com is stored on many computers as it is now, and transactions can be verified, and the old chain can even be reassembled if you have enough data, but a single node does not have to store the old chain.
